Gertrude Hartkoorn
The Depression was the crucible in which Gert Hartkoorn's work ethic was forged. Her mother died at 46, and Gert gave up her own job in order to care for her young sister. As soon as possible though, she returned to the workforce, and she supported herself for 48 years.
She started as a check filer at First National Bank of Harvey, Illinois, and ultimately became Vice President of Human Resources. It never occurred to her not to work, until one day a co-worker wondered out loud, "Gertie, when are you going to retire?" Within a few days, Gert had spoken with her boss and put a retirement plan in place!
At Holland Home today she is known as a smart, successful woman who can get the job done — whatever it is! We are thrilled that Gert has decided to share life with us at Holland Home.
