PROMISES: GOD'S AND MAN'S

Too often man’s word is merely a clay pot broken with a stroke. On man’s word, hang only what it will bear. On your own resolve, depend not at all. On the promise of your God, hang time and eternity, this world and the next. Human frailty sends us searching
for God’s divine dependability.
thanks in Jesus’ name. Amen.

I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Genesis 3:15 KJV

This is the Bible's first promise. It exhilarates us on this, the year's first day. Cryptic and brief, it contains the entire gospel, and forecasts the triumph of God's grace. Jesus Christ is the seed of the woman. He was bruised terribly, but triumphed gloriously. By faith in him and obedience to him, we may share his victory. Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
All the more will he hear when others are unkind and unobliging. If we can speak of him as "My God," we may with absolute certainty say, "My God will hear me."
Even if he knows the road, it is hard for a blind man to find his way. But a road which he has not known at all is quite out of the question for his unguided feet. We are by nature blind as to the way of salvation. How can we know the way of life except that Jesus anoint our eyes and enable us to see it? Without his touch, we would never have known, never have imagined that the way of the cross leads home.

Prayer | Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his holy name. What a benediction is here set before the generous, kindhearted servants of God! To be blessed in all that we do is to be blessed indeed.
GOOD NEWS AND BAD
God gives and also takes away. Note, there will be taken away that which we think we have. That is, God will take away any illusion we may have. Pray that it be done before the final
day. Let us never give ourselves the benefit of any doubt. In matters of religion, strive for certainty. Blessed are all who can say with Paul,
"I know whom I have believed" (2 Timothy 1:12).

Prayer | Dear Lord, you satisfy our mouths with good things. Receive from our mouths sincere thanks for every good and perfect gift. Amen.

THE SOLES OF THE RIGHTEOUS
Special shoes are necessary equipment for traveling rough ways and for trampling deadly foes. God will fit us with durable footwear, and we shall have protection proportionate to our difficulties. As for strength, it too shall be proportioned to the stress and burden of the day.

Prayer | Dear Lord, you know what things we need, even before we ask. All your gifts remind us of your unfailing love to us. Receive our thanks, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

A GOOD FOLLOWING
Not all at once, but by degrees shall we attain to holy knowledge. Our business is to persevere and learn little by little. And we should keep to our main topic -- not this particular doctrine or that, but the Lord himself: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is life eternal, Jesus said, to know God.

Prayer | Dear Lord, as you blessed with your sweet presence the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, we ask you to be our guest at this table. Amen.

GRACE ABOUNDING

Tiny birds seem to be all mouth when the mother comes to feed them. So let us take in grace at every door. Our human notions would lead us to ask small things because we are so undeserving. But, as a hymn says, "Thou art coming to a king, large petitions with thee bring. For his grace and power are such; none can ever ask too much" (J. Newton). Both asking and receiving, let us open wide our hearts to every means of grace.

Prayer | Sanctify, dear Lord, these gifts, so that inspired by them, we shall serve you in the world you so love. Amen.

ALWAYS ON TIME

Mercy may seem slow, but it is sure. The Lord, in unfailing wisdom, has appointed a time for the outgoing of his grace and power; and God's time is the best time. Too often, we are in a hurry. The prospects of his blessing and intervention excite us and hasten our longings. Be assured, the Lord will keep his appointments. He is never before his time, and never behind.

Prayer | Dear Lord, your mercy emboldens us to ask you to forgive our sins. Your grace allows us to ask, again, for daily bread. Through Christ we pray, amen.

PROMISE NUMBER ONE

This is the Bible's first promise. It exhilarates us on this, the year's first day. Cryptic and brief, it contains the entire gospel, and forecasts the triumph of God's grace. Jesus Christ is the seed of the woman. He was bruised terribly, but
triumphed gloriously. By faith in him and obedience to him, we may share his victory. Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

Prayer | Fortify me, O God, body and soul, to run and win the race of life through the grace that is in Jesus Christ. Amen.

PROMISES: GOD'S AND MAN'S

Too often man's word is merely a clay pot broken with a stroke. On man's word, hang only what it will bear. On your own resolve, depend not at all. On the promise of your God, hang time and eternity, this world and the next. Human frailty sends us searching for God's divine dependability.

Prayer | As we break bread, we feel our need for you, our Father in heaven. Because you have given, we may now partake. Joyfully we return sincere thanks in Jesus’ name. Amen.
