HOMER GLEN, Ill.–Representatives from the Lockport American Legion Auxiliary Unit 18 came to Victorian Village yesterday to distribute Christmas gifts to veterans. This act is part of their program “Gifts to the Yanks.”

Three members of the unit spoke to the veterans, distributed gifts, and sang Christmas carols. The women recognized each veteran by name. They thanked each person individually for their service and delivered the gift. The crowd gave an enthusiastic round of applause to each veteran.

The Lockport American Legion Auxiliary Unit 18 visits several senior communities in the area. Victorian Village staff say these ladies remember the residents on many occasions, not merely at Christmas.

“I don’t know who gets more out of this–us or the veterans,” says one Lockport American Legion Auxiliary member.

The Gift to the Yanks Program began in 1944 as a means of remembering hospitalized war veterans. The American Legion, Department of Illinois, has continued the program ever since then by giving gifts annually to patients at V.A. hospitals and senior living communities throughout the state. This year, the veterans were gifted jackets.

Residents at Victorian Village applauded their fellow veterans when each name was announced.

Those who were unable to attend due to health reasons or scheduling conflicts were given gifts privately by Victorian Village staff, so the Lockport American Legion Auxiliary ensured that no veteran was forgotten.

“I don’t know who gets more out of this–us or the veterans,” one Lockport American Legion Auxiliary member said. Both other women agreed. “This is a very special day for us.”
