Rep. Breen visits Saratoga Grove, Providence of Downers Grove

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (June 2016) – Illinois State Representative Peter Breen recently stopped by Saratoga Grove and Providence of Downers Grove, speaking with residents and taking a tour of the senior living communities. The tour included Providence’s rehab department, where Breen expressed his amazement that clients were able to recover and return home so quickly. Executive Director Deji Adegoye took the opportunity to explain the close relationships that Providence is building with the area hospitals – a relationship that benefits both Providence and the hospitals, but most importantly, the clients. “It’s important to us that our clients successfully rehab – we work with the managed care organization and with our therapy partner, Marianjoy, to help our clients get back home as soon as possible,” Deji said. After the tour of next-door Saratoga Grove, residents and staff gathered in the library for a reception with the representative. More than 25 residents and staff attended the address, along with the Leading Age Illinois Director of Communications, Jason Speaks, and the representative’s wife, Margie Breen. Rep. Breen spoke about his first year and a half in office, including both his triumphs – such as having several bills submitted – and his struggles with state […]

Providence of Downers Grove resident shares his strong belief in the importance of political involvement

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (OCTOBER 2014) — Providence of Downers Grove resident Jim Bersie has some advice for the upcoming election. It’s short and it’s simple, but he believes in it very strongly: everyone should get out and vote. “I think politics are important, and people need to get involved, or they’ll miss things about our country,”Bersie said. “I tell people, ‘I don’t care whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican. Stop complaining and get involved in the political process. Run for office or volunteer for the person you choose. And, most importantly, vote!’” Bersie has taken his own advice: he has worked in politics, volunteered for candidates, and always, always votes. “I voted as soon as I was old enough and haven’t missed a vote since,”he said. Now, he has an absentee ballot sent to him by the DuPage County Election Commission automatically for each election. And he’s not the only one at Providence of Downers Grove who receives an absentee ballot —in fact, Percy Bhagat, the Life Enrichment Director, gets the ballots for all the long-term residents at Providence. “I’m all set to go for next month’s election,”she said. “Residents like to vote, and it’s important for them to do […]

Dutch genealogy expert shares her knowledge at Park Place of Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. (OCTOBER 2014) — If you are of Dutch American heritage, Ginger Bilthuis may be able to help you fill in your family tree. She may even be able to tell you if your great-great-grandfather was a brewer in Groningen or a farmer in Friesland. You see, Dutch genealogy is her passion. She specializes in those of Dutch descent who live in, or whose families have passed through, Chicagoland —and she has a database of about 300,000 names to prove it. Recently, she brought her wealth of knowledge to Park Place of Elmhurst, where she volunteered to help residents trace their family lines. Ginger (née Evenhouse) went to Timothy Christian Schools, and was part of the first class to graduate from the high school in Elmhurst. So Park Place —right next door to Timothy —seemed like a good place to offer her services, which were completely free of charge. She met with 10 people over nine hours, talking to residents and searching her database to show them information about generations they never knew. She showed them birth and marriage records, census reports, and family trees. She then spent time over the next few days digging up more details and offering printed […]

Park Place veterans on WGN TV

CHICAGO (July 2014) — Last October, we sat down with a group of veterans who live at Park Place of Elmhurst. All of these veterans had participated in an Honor Flight, and all of them expressed deep appreciation for the experience. We posted the “Honor Flights at Park Place” story on our blog, and one of the local newspapers picked it up. Some of the resident veterans have also been active as speakers at local schools and community meetings. On July 24, two of those veterans — Fae Gedz and Wally Sandberg — traveled downtown to appear on WGN TV. News Personality Steve Sanders met with both of them in Studio 3, though only Wally was interviewed for “Chicago Scene.” Honor Flight Ambassador Ron Wolflick appeared with Wally in the segment.
