Hallmark of Caring honors Providence employees

TINLEY PARK, Ill. (March 2016) — Each year, we honor outstanding employees in an event called “Hallmark of Caring.” Providence people in various jobs are nominated by their co-workers, our residents, or residents’ families for their efforts throughout the year. This year’s 74 honorees live out our mission to “enhance the lives of those we serve in the name of Jesus Christ,” and demonstrate excellence in skill, work ethic, and compassion. Employees will be added to the list below until the event on March 11 — look for updates here and on our Facebook pages. Join us in congratulating the honorees!   Honorees from Park Place of Elmhurst:   Stephanie James, CNA – Skilled Stephanie is extremely compassionate and always has a positive attitude. She makes an extra effort, like coming in early to shampoo a resident’s hair because they cannot extend their head in the shampoo bowl in the salon. She also shows initiative by leading restorative exercises with our residents.     Angela Bianchi, CNA – Skilled “When Angela’s here, you know it’s going to be a good day.” This was said by a client who has a great appreciation for her. That’s because Angela is always cheerful, takes pride in […]

Being a blessing: Volunteer faithfully serves communion to Providence clients

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. (January 2016) — At Providence of Palos Heights, Alice Doherty is a blessing. Every week, Alice brings the Eucharist to the Catholic residents and patients at the community. She serves faithfully, visiting more than 20 people each Friday. She also takes turns with other volunteers for Sunday visits, sometimes seeing more than 40 people on those days. Alice is a Eucharistic minister in the Catholic Church. Along with her service at rehab center, she also leads the rosary before morning mass at Incarnation Parish in Palos Heights. The parish — right down the street from the Providence community — “adopts” and cares for Catholic residents at Providence. They not only serve the Eucharist to individual residents, but also hold communion services in the chapel and administer the anointing of the sick. Alice serves as a Minister of Care — along with the Eucharist, she brings residents words of hope and encouragement. “Alice spends time sharing the message that the priest gives at morning Mass; she also prays during her visits,” said Diane Giglio, Life Enrichment Director at Providence of Palos Heights. “She gets to know the clients personally.” These clients are recovering from illnesses, injuries, or surgeries, […]

Trinity volleyball serves at Providence of Palos Heights

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. (August 2015) — The Trinity Christian College women’s volleyball team took an afternoon off the court last week, and instead spent time cleaning and playing BINGO with residents at Providence of Palos Heights. Karliegh Krchmery, a marketing major from Merrionette Park, Ill., and the Trolls’ lone senior, said that the pre-season volunteer works allows the team to have fun and bond while giving back to the community. “As a Christian-based program, we want to get out and do what we can,” she said. “This year, we decided to come here, because it’s also a Christian place and seemed like a good fit.” The women organized books and movies, washed walls and tables in the kitchen, cleaned the patio for an upcoming barbecue, cleaned wheelchairs, and assisted residents for BINGO. “We got in some team bonding, too,” Krchmery said. “We had a lot of fun, and we’ll definitely do it again.” The team has already made plans with Providence Life Enrichment Director Diane Giglio to spend another afternoon volunteering next semester. “They certainly make our job a little easier, with their effort from start to finish,” Giglio said. “I’d like to thank them for the excellent job they […]

Chaplains provide “church away from church” for residents

TINLEY PARK, Ill. (April 2015) — Through Providence’s chaplaincy program, pastors serve our campuses by providing spiritual support, leading worship, and serving residents as well as families and staff. Six chaplains serve 10 Providence communities and Providence Hospice clients. Rev. Phil Tjoelker serves as the chaplain for three Providence locations: Providence of Palos Heights, Thomas Place of Orland Park, and Victorian Village in Homer Glen. Below, he shares his thoughts on his work, and what the chaplaincy program means to him and to the residents he serves. Church away from church by Chaplain Phil Tjoelker A major priority of mine as a Providence chaplain is to enable our residents to worship the Lord “in spirit and in truth.” The worship of the Lord is the highest calling Christians have.  This calling does not end when one enters a Providence community. It must continue. There are several clients I work with who are able to continue worshipping weekly in their home churches.  This should be encouraged.  Many clients, however, are not able to worship in their home churches because of health challenges and because they have had to move far from their home churches. Eleanor, a resident of Victorian Village, moved from Ohio to Illinois to be closer […]
