CRETE, Ill. — Crete resident Catherine (Newald) Walters, former resident of Dolton and Thornwood, will celebrate her 107th birthday Friday afternoon with a celebration at her home at the Village Woods Christian Retirement Community.
Walters, a two-time cancer survivor, lived independently for 100 years before moving to Village Woods. Village Woods has both independent living and assisted living options, and, while she started in independent living, this centenarian now resides in assisted living.
“I feel very fortunate to still be living,” she says.
Walters was one of 6 children, and still has one surviving sister. She also has 4 children, 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Walters, who was married for nearly 61 years, was a lifelong active member at St. Paul Lutheran Church, teaching the Sunday School class for 3-and 4-year-olds.
Walters continues to be active, taking part in exercise classes and bingo, and enjoying long drives with family and holiday get-togethers.
“I have a lot of good memories,” she says. “Lots of good memories.
