A Life of Service, Strength, and Steady Grace | William Forsyth
After a stroke and a long recovery, Bill moved to Park Place, where he has found not only the care he needs but also a community that respects his independence, honors his story, and gives him space to enjoy the things he loves most: family, history, and a good audiobook.
Bill served in the Navy for over three decades, including three years on active duty and 27 years in the reserves. His assignments took him up and down the coasts of Washington and Oregon, across the Pacific to Hawaii and Guam. During the Cold War, he helped monitor for potential Russian missile threats and oversaw patrol routes on naval ships that kept watch over vital areas.
They raised four children and were blessed with 14 grandchildren. One of Bill’s favorite memories is a photo taken, coordinated by his daughter-in-law. “It’s a beautiful family,” he said proudly.
Later in life, Mary was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. As her condition progressed, Bill and his family sought a place where they could both receive the support they needed. His daughter began researching options near her home and soon discovered Park Place of Elmhurst. “They did a wonderful job taking care of Mary,” Bill shared. “And now they’re doing a wonderful job taking care of me.”
Though he’s not often drawn to group activities, Bill finds joy in simpler pleasures. His daughter set him up with audiobooks, and he’s made his way through more than 20, including biographies of U.S. presidents. He also keeps in touch with friends back in Springfield, enjoying long chats that help keep the past close while he settles into this new chapter.
When asked what he likes most about Park Place, Bill is quick to name the staff. “They’ve been wonderful,” he said. He’s also grateful for the community’s support following Mary’s passing and for the way his needs have been met with dignity and kindness. “I’m glad my daughter found this place,” he said. “It’s been the right move.”
Bill has lived a life of great responsibility, raising a family and caring for a spouse in her final years. Now, at Park Place, he gets to rest in the care of others, surrounded by the warmth of a place that feels like home.
