Park Place of St. John Celebrates 5 Years of Service

On October 16, 2014, Providence Life Services broke ground on its first Indiana community: Park Place of St. John. Park Place would bring Providence-quality retirement living, skilled nursing, rehab therapy, and other care services to Northwest Indiana.

Located at the entrance of The Gates of St. John subdivision, and built on land generously donated by the Boomsma, Lotton, and Philippe families, this newest development was designed to meet the needs of an expanding Providence family. Part of this new design included three innovative Small Houses for Skilled Nursing care, like the homes already popular at Victorian Village.

“By God’s providence, we come to the Gates of St. John,” said Providence Life Services CEO Richard Schutt at the groundbreaking ceremony. “Today marks the beginning of many years of service to the St. John community.”

On October 4, 2016, the Small Houses opened, and on December 15, 2016, Retirement Living residents signed their papers, picked up their keys, and began moving in to Park Place of St. John.

“The first day, life started,” says Beth Cunningham, Community Manager at Park Place. “The residents moved in, they started making friends, and just enjoying meals together.”

Park Place experienced an overwhelming community response to their initial 60 Retirement Living apartments. On March 28, 2018, Providence Life Services broke ground on Phase II, which added 54 new apartments to the campus. By the fall of 2019, residents began moving to the newest phase of Retirement Living.

As far as the future of Park Place, our board continues to plan adding a purpose-built assisted living building, adding another level of care to what we offer. While currently, many residents extend their time in our Retirement Living apartments with assistance from our Campus Care services, adding another level of assistance will allow us to serve even more people.

We look back with gratitude as we see how God’s hand orchestrated the building and growth of Park Place over the past five years, a community that is known for its warmth, friendship, and family atmosphere. We look forward with hope to the future of this special place.
