A Love That Crossed Oceans
They brought with them a strong work ethic and a quiet perseverance. He worked as a lab technician in the textile industry, and she used her skills as a seamstress, often tailoring men’s clothing for a local shop. They saved carefully, always planning for the next chapter, long before they ever knew what it might look like.
Now, many years and many memories later, they’ve found peace and comfort at Royal Atrium Inn. It was their children who first encouraged the move, and while the decision brought some uncertainty, it’s one they’re deeply thankful for.
“We like it here,” Joyce said, surrounded by warm smiles and the comfort of routine. “Everything is taken care of. The people are kind, helpful, and respectful. It’s a good place to be.”
Their days are full in the best kind of way. They enjoy Bible study, group games, occasional outings, and simple moments together. They’ve taken trips back to the Netherlands over the years—often saving up to visit loved ones still there—but they always return to the life they’ve lovingly built here.
Through the years, Andy and Joyce have been blessed with 20 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren in their growing family. Visits from their children and great-grandkids are a regular joy, especially when little ones come through the door on Monday afternoons. There’s pride in their voices when they talk about their family—about the Dutch language still spoken, about the grandchildren learning and growing just a few towns over.
Though age has brought its challenges, including memory loss, their love and companionship remain constant. They laugh easily with each other, finish each other’s thoughts, and reflect on their journey with grace and humility.
“We’re thankful,” Joyce said. “This is a safe place, a good place. We’re at home.”
