Providence Life Services announced that a COVID-19 Recovery Unit opened at the Providence Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center of Downers Grove.
The purpose of this Recovery Unit is to assist our local community by freeing up acute care beds in area hospitals so that they can continue to care for the sickest patients. Providence Life Services is doing our part in the fight against the pandemic by accepting transfers of low-acuity, COVID-19 positive, older adult patients to our facility, where they can continue to recover and receive rehabilitation before returning home.
The COVID Recovery Unit is a distinct wing of the Providence Downers Grove building, which houses 14 private, isolation rooms. Most patients will arrive by ambulance after being discharged from area hospitals. Many of them will have underlying chronic medical conditions and will need additional time to recuperate, but do not require the higher level of care and resources of an acute care hospital. Patients requiring a ventilator are not candidates for the COVID Recovery Unit.
The unit has a separate building entrance, and has been sealed with a zip wall to secure the wing from the rest of the facility. A trained, designated care team including nurses, CNAs, and respiratory therapists, as well as pulmonology and infectious disease physicians will treat these patients. In compliance with all guidelines published by the Centers of Disease and Prevention Control and the Illinois Department of Public Health, all staff members will be thoroughly screened before and during each shift for COVID-19 symptoms. Providence currently has personal protective equipment (including N95 and surgical masks, face shields, gowns, and gloves) and other essential resources to care for these patients and protect our staff members.
Should the need arise, residents of Providence Downers Grove and other Providence Life Services communities will have priority access, but many patients will be residents of the community at large.
Providence Downers Grove continues to enact precautionary measures to protect the health and safety of all our residents and staff. These measures include restricting all visitors from the building, modifying our activities and Life Enrichment programs to adhere to social distancing guidelines, and delivering all meals directly to residents’ rooms. We require all building staff not working in the COVID Recovery Unit to wear cloth face masks, and require our residents to do the same.
Our caregivers have demonstrated outstanding dedication, compassion, and creativity in the face of this pandemic. In order to recognize their efforts, the Board of Providence Life Services has created the Mission Award Fund to award a monetary bonus to those staff members working on the front-lines. We welcome donations to this fund via our secure website at www.DonateToProvidence.com.
